PORTSMOUTH, VA – Mercy Chefs, a Virginia-based nonprofit specializing in disaster relief, has deployed to Onaway, Michigan, in response to severe flooding across Northern Michigan.
The organization is serving hot, chef-prepared meals to families, first responders, and volunteers in Onaway and surrounding areas. The organization is preparing and distributing meals at St. Paul Catholic Church, located at 20811 Washington Ave. in Onaway. First meals were distributed for dinner on April 20.
“We’re in Michigan to do what we do best: provide hot, quality meals to those who need them most,” said Gary LeBlanc, founder and CEO of Mercy Chefs. “We were on the ground last month in Roscommon County following the historic blizzard, and we feel blessed to be in a position to reach the people of Michigan again.”
The nonprofit is also monitoring flooding in surrounding states, including Wisconsin, and has the resources to deploy a second team if needed.
Mercy Chefs was founded 20 years ago in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when LeBlanc volunteered in New Orleans and was troubled by the lack of safe, high-quality food available to disaster victims. Today, the organization has provided more than 35 million restaurant-quality meals across the country and around the globe.
