Back-to-School Block Party Brings Joy & Support to Portsmouth Families

PORTSMOUTH, VA – Families in Portsmouth gathered for a high-energy, joy-filled afternoon as Mercy Chefs hosted a Back-to-School Block Party designed to ease the financial burden of a new school year and celebrate the community with food, fun, and connection.

The nonprofit distributed more than 700 backpacks filled with school supplies and served nearly 1,400 hot, chef-prepared meals during the event. Families also enjoyed a range of free activities, including a live DJ, gaming truck, dunk tank, pie-eating contest, and even a live mad scientist demonstration. Students preparing to return to school were also treated to complimentary haircuts and vision screenings.

“We were excited to host this block party as a way to love and support our neighbors here in Portsmouth,” said Founder and CEO Chef Gary LeBlanc. “It was more than just a meal or a backpack—it was about showing families they’re not alone and that their community stands with them.”

The block party was an extension of Mercy Chefs’ Portsmouth Community Kitchen, which serves thousands of meals each month to food-insecure families, seniors, and individuals facing crisis. Located in the heart of the city, the kitchen provides year-round nourishment with love, compassion, and dignity.

“This block party reflects what we strive to do every day in Portsmouth,” added Ann LeBlanc, CoFounder and President. “Through our Community Kitchens, we’ve built lasting relationships and provided consistent support. This was a chance to celebrate those connections and remind our neighbors that they are seen, valued, and cared for.”

Local heroes from the Portsmouth Fire and Police Departments joined in the celebration, creating an even more welcoming and festive atmosphere for children and families.
