PORTSMOUTH, VA – ABC’s Good Morning America went live from Mercy Chefs’ Portsmouth headquarters on Friday morning as part of its “50 States in 50 Weeks: America the Beautiful” series, spotlighting the nonprofit’s work to feed body and soul in times of crisis.
GMA meteorologist Ginger Zee joined the Mercy Chefs team during the broadcast, celebrating the organization’s impact both in disaster zones and right in its hometown community. Watch the full segment below.
During the broadcast, Mercy Chefs received a special honor from Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who issued a proclamation declaring September 5 as Mercy Chefs Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia, recognizing the organization’s nearly two decades of service.

Founded in 2006, Mercy Chefs is a nonprofit organization that provides hot, chef-prepared meals to victims, volunteers, and first responders following natural disasters and emergencies. Since its founding, the organization has served over 32 million meals across the country and around the globe.
Beyond disaster relief, Mercy Chefs addresses ongoing food insecurity through its Community Kitchens. The flagship Portsmouth kitchen, opened in 2019, has provided more than 725,000 meals locally through partnerships with schools, churches, senior living centers, and other community organizations. The kitchen also offers culinary training and after-school meal programs to further invest in the Hampton Roads community.

Mercy Chefs also operates Community Kitchens in Richmond, VA, and Nashville, TN, with plans to open additional locations in St. Louis, MO, and Tampa, FL, later this year.
