Hope for the Holidays

America's growing inflation crisis is going to hit families hard this holiday season. The New York Times is reporting that this year's Thanksgiving meal will be the most expensive meal in the history of the holiday.

According to the Times: "Nearly every component of the traditional American Thanksgiving dinner, from the disposable aluminum turkey roasting pan to the coffee and pie, will cost more this year, according to agricultural economists, farmers and grocery executives. Major food companies like Nestlé and Procter & Gamble have already warned consumers to brace for more price increases."

The cost of turkey, sweet potatoes, even vanilla extract... are all up! A staffer with the Congressional Leadership Fund said that working families can't even afford to celebrate the holidays this year.

The situation is even worse in disaster-stricken communities where Mercy Chefs has served in 2021. Many do not even have homes equipped to cook a turkey, and now that costs are rising, we know that many families will go without a real Thanksgiving meal.

That's why Mercy Chefs' holiday outreach is even more critical this year. The week of Thanksgiving, we'll be back in Southeast Louisiana serving full Thanksgiving dinners to Hurricane Ida victims. We'll also be providing meals for other communities hit by disaster or facing serious economic after-effects of the pandemic and now inflation crisis.

If you haven't done so already, would you consider matching what your family will spend on your Thanksgiving meal with a corresponding gift to Mercy Chefs and "set a second table" for a hurting family? If your family typically spends about $60 on Thanksgiving, your $60 gift to Mercy Chefs will actually set three "second tables" for families of four! Your $100 donation will set five full "second tables." Please go here to make your tax-deductible gift.

If you prefer to mail your charitable donation, checks can be sent to Mercy Chefs at 711 Washington St, Portsmouth, VA 23704.

The past 18 months have been extremely tough times for families. Many of those who have been hit by natural disasters in the past year are still reeling. This can make the holiday season the most difficult time of the year. The best thing about our holiday outreaches is when we can put a smile on a kid's face.
