The Portsmouth Commons
Nearly 20 years ago, Mercy Chefs began with a simple mission: Just go feed people. Since then, we have served over 30 million meals across 33 states and 33 countries, bringing hope in times of disaster and crisis. Now, we’re deepening our roots right here at home.
We are launching a $3.5 million revitalization project, The Portsmouth Commons, to expand our ability to serve more neighbors throughout Hampton Roads. This project is a direct response to the ongoing need in Portsmouth, where nearly 18% of residents and 59% of public school students depend on free or reduced-price meals.

A New Chapter of Hope
Located in a historic building just steps from our headquarters, this new facility will provide:
Expanded kitchen space to prepare hot, nutritious meals for local schools, low-income households, and local organizations.
Office and logistics support for regional outreach.
Dedicated community space for culinary training, grocery distribution, and events.
- A teaching garden to help teens, single parents, and jobseekers learn healthy eating habits.
Make an Impact
The Portsmouth Commons is more than a building—it’s a promise to serve our neighbors. Your support brings this vision to life. Join us in creating a lasting impact right here in Hampton Roads.

Building on History to Shape the Future
The new site at 519 County Street has a rich legacy as a former church, synagogue, and community hall. Mercy Chefs will honor that legacy by restoring it as a place of nourishment, hope, dignity, and connection.
